Traditional Desert Accommodation

Jhopri Traditional Desert Huts

When you stay at Nomads Desert Retreat you can have your own rustic and spacious traditional adobe desert hut or jhopri. Each jhopri has been built by local craftsmen using traditional techniques and materials, and has windows and a door secured with a  padlock. They are cool in the day and warm at night.

Inside your jhopri are twin beds, each with a comfortable bista (mattress), cadars (sheets), rizie (thick blanket) and takiyas (pillows), with dhurries (rugs) spread over the floor, so you will have a warm snug night’s sleep. The twin beds can be made up as a double if you want.

We’ll collect you from Jaisalmer bus or train station (collection from the airport has a small charge) and bring you to Nomads Desert Retreat.

Besides your accommodation and breakfast, lunch and dinner, the following is included:

  • Bedding
  • Drinking water
  • Use of kitchen
  • Use of outside areas and seating
  • Shared bathroom
  • Wifi

If the huts are all full or if there’s extra people in your party, we have a few possibilities for you:

We have spare mattresses and bedding, so we have sunbeds which could be used in a hut. Also we could make up a bed on the floor.

On warm nights we can make up beds outside and you can sleep under the stars. Both ourselves and our guests often do this, it’s a great experience!

We can also offer a small 2 person tent which you can book via our booking search.

Any extra people will have all the same facilities and amenities, including food, water and pickup from Jaisalmer.

If you are going to need extra accommodation, please contact us in advance to discuss.

For those on a very tight budget (or if the huts are all full) we can offer a small 2 person tent. You have all the same facilities and amenities, including food, water and pickup from Jaisalmer.

We will sometimes accept volunteers at the retreat if you’d like to help with our work. We would ask for assistance with things like gardening, wood collection, general helping around the retreat, and with any ongoing projects. We’ll provide accommodation and just ask for a small contribution for food.

If you’re interested in volunteering at Nomads, please contact us and let’s have a chat!

About Us

We are an English and Indian couple, Alex and Aladin. After running Nomads Guesthouse in Jaisalmer, we started building a home in the Thar desert to share our love and passion for desert life and culture.

Facilities & Amenities

The retreat has a range of facilities. There is a kitchen which guests can use and a shared bathroom. Outside there are shaded sitting areas where you can relax and watch the world go (very) slowly by.

Out & About

From the retreat you can explore the desert and visit the local village. We can also arrange jeep trips to the surrounding area where you can visit some of the fascinating places that the Thar desert holds.
